ABOUT

The Youth Theater Project is a 29 year-old after-school program focused on helping high school age students create original works of theater that speak to the challenges of today.

This Fall, YTP will present an opportunity for youth participants to take a deeper dive into the art of playwriting, and takes place in coordination with the national organization ENOUGH! - Plays To End Gun Violence.

Have you ever wanted to make your voice heard about a topic you’re passionate about? Have you ever thought writing something creative? Have you been curious about the world of theater, and how play comes together? If you answered yes to any of those questions, this is the class for you!

This class are to be announced soon due to circumstances beyond our control, YTP is postponing the start date of this project to Spring of 2025.

Throughout the six-week session, young writers will each construct their own ten-minute plays for “ENOUGH! Plays to End Gun Violence.” This hands-on intensive, will be beginner-friendly while being rewarding at every experience level. Young writers will learn how art can be a vehicle for activism, and how their unique creative voice can be a catalyst for change. This philosophy is central to the spirit of the SF Mime Troupe.  At the end of the six weeks, the Young Writers will have written at least two drafts of their plays, while also learning the fundamentals of idea generation, research, collaboration, feedback, and revision, skills which are valuable for all forms of writing not just theater. All while creating an unforgettable bond with new friends and collaborators.

Then, writers will gather in March for weekend modeled after a professional workshop. Each play will be read by professional actors, and those actors will give writers their perspective. This is valuable information for their final revisions before the “ENOUGH!” submission date on April 1st.

This workshop meets after school at our studio located in the Mission District of San Francisco. The plays will be workshopped and developed with the aid of Bay Area professional actors culminating in a public staged reading in April 2025.

YTP snacks at each workshop session and youth apprentices will be paid at the completion of the program. The Youth Theater Project is entirely funded by foundations & individual donors and is always free to participants.
